Easy Ways to Keep Your Retainers Clean

When you're able to wear invisible braces, such as Invisalign, you need to do what you can to maintain their integrity. A big part of this is taking the right steps towards keeping them clean. In addition to ensuring your Invisalign-style braces last longer, it's the best way to maintain your oral health. Fortunately, keeping your invisible braces clean is easier than you might think.

Maintain the moisture

Most of the bacteria that live in your mouth thrive when there's no oxygen present. One of the best ways to ensure oxygen is present throughout your mouth and around your retainers is to drink plenty of water. When you remove your retainers from your mouth, rinse them with water to create the right environment for preventing bacterial growth. In addition to ensuring your invisible braces remain clean, this is an excellent way to prevent gum disease from becoming a problem.

Use manufacturer-recommended cleaning solutions

The way your manufacturer will recommend keeping your invisible braces clean will vary between makes and fits. However, most either make their own cleaning solutions or they recommend specific ones. Adhering to their instructions will keep bacteria at bay, and it will prevent damage to the braces' structure. Damaged braces can damage your gums, too, which then increases the chances of more bacteria breeding. If you use a brush when cleaning your trays, make sure you don't use it as vigorously as you do when you brush your teeth.

Refine your oral hygiene routine

Your Invisalign-style braces are only ever as clean as the environment they spend most of their time in. When your mouth forms part of that environment, it's up to you to make sure your mouth is as clean as possible. While you can't banish bad oral bacteria altogether, you can implement good mouth hygiene techniques. When brushing your teeth, make sure you set an alarm to achieve the full two minutes. Additionally, use a long, thin tooth-flossing brush to remove stray bits of food after you eat, as they can encourage bacteria to grow. Finally, find a mouthwash you can tolerate to sterilise your oral environment and banish any stray pieces of food that remain after brushing and flossing.

With a little effort and a regular routine, keeping your invisible braces clean is simple. If you notice any breaks or if they become loose-fitting, always approach your orthodontist for advice. An excellent fit and clean trays are central to maintaining great oral health.

About Me

Dental Procedures: A Guide

Hi! My name is Jenny. I live in Melbourne with my husband, two kids and a dog. Right now, I have taken a little time out to look after my newborn babies and to be a full-time homemaker. However, before I was a mom and a wife, I trained to be a dental nurse. Dentistry runs in the family. My dad was a dentist and so was my grandad. As a child, I remember playing with the models of teeth they had in the office. I really miss helping people to maintain their dental health, so I decided to start a blog. I hope you find it useful.
