What You Should Do If You've Had Enough with Your Chipped Teeth

If, over the years, you've built up a number of tiny chips on your front teeth you may have finally decided to do something about it. Perhaps those chips were caused by biting into hard foods or nuts, or may be the consequence of some overenthusiastic contact sport. Either way, it's affecting your smile and self-confidence, so what can you realistically do?

Choosing Laminate Veneers

Assuming that the underlying teeth are essentially sound, your best bet in this situation would be to consider getting a laminate veneer made of porcelain. This is a very thin layer of specially crafted material that is attached to the surface of the tooth, using an adhesive made of resin. Think of these veneers as a replacement for the original tooth enamel. The technician can use their considerable craft in order to come up with veneers that mask all of those chips and cracks and look as good as – if not better – than the originals.

Two in One

In addition to their ability to "mask" any imperfections, veneers can also help you to hide the colour of your teeth, if they are badly stained. While whitening is an option for some, this type of bleaching is not always appropriate, especially if you have very sensitive gums. The veneers can therefore solve two problem areas in one go.

Testing Them Out

There's even more good news. It is possible for you to have a test drive of these teeth before deciding that you want to make the change permanent. The dentist can make a provisional set from a special plastic material after your first visit for the consultation. If you're happy with what you get, then instructions can be sent to the lab for the permanent replacements to be made. They will use a mould of the teeth and come up with a mixture of water and porcelain powder, which will then be applied in specific layers to provide the finished result.

Fitment Options

It may be necessary for the dentist to reduce the size of the existing teeth slightly in order to accept the new veneers. On the other hand, you may be a suitable candidate for the latest style of veneer, which requires a minimum amount of preparation and no reduction.

Seeing What Works

The first thing that you should do is to visit your dentist, to get their opinion about your best option.

About Me

Dental Procedures: A Guide

Hi! My name is Jenny. I live in Melbourne with my husband, two kids and a dog. Right now, I have taken a little time out to look after my newborn babies and to be a full-time homemaker. However, before I was a mom and a wife, I trained to be a dental nurse. Dentistry runs in the family. My dad was a dentist and so was my grandad. As a child, I remember playing with the models of teeth they had in the office. I really miss helping people to maintain their dental health, so I decided to start a blog. I hope you find it useful.
